hey yimay - we tried Tam deli today, it was awesome. I had a grilled pork sandwich, which was awesome. Also I couldn't pass up a steamed pork bun, which was great -- the filling was sweet and the bun was sticky and doughy. Based on my first visit, I'd say it's worth a second trip.
Posted by joe at May 10, 2004 9:03 PMI've been going to Tâm for a few years now, and I can't recommend it enough. Besides the more conventional sandwiches (my favorite is the combination -- grilled chicken, ham, and pate!), they make a boiled shrimp sandwich which is cool and comforting, and a buttery fried shrimp sandwich which is utterly decadent. Along with maybe Sunflower, their eggrolls are the best in Austin, and the shrimp and shredded yam cakes (can't remember what they're called) are incredible. Finally, and this is most important, I think they're the only Vietnamese restaurant in town that makes curry the way my mom makes it.
Posted by jacob at May 13, 2004 12:58 PMA guy at my office brought a bunch of these back for lunch the other day from the Saigon Deli in Seattle... he just called it a 'Vietnamese Sandwich'. I was wondering what the sauce was, I sort of assumed it was some kind of hot mustard but couldn't tell either... I guess the slight spice came from the peppers.
The sandwich I had was excellent, but I kind of doubt it used the proper banh mi rolls. Still, tasted great, and cost like $2.
